Alabama baseball sweeps Rob Vaughn’s first series as head coach

Alabama baseball’s Rob Vaughn era got off to a hot start, as the Crimson Tide rolled to a weekend sweep of Manhattan College at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. UA shut out the Jaspers on Friday and Saturday, winning 4-0 and 15-0 respectively.

Then on Sunday, Manhattan made it a game, but Alabama’s bats got going and the Crimson Tide hit four home runs in the 11-8 triumph. The first of those was an inside-the-park homer off the bat of Justin Lebron in the third inning, his first career home run.

According to a release from UA Athletics, Lebron is believed to be just the second Alabama baseball player ever to have an inside-the-parker as his first homer, joining David Kindred, who did it in 2010.

“I didn’t think we played awesome baseball today but I thought our energy was great,” Vaughn said on the radio broadcast after the final game Sunday. I thought we played hard, we hit enough homers and threw enough strikes to get it done. We gotta get better but it’s a good start.”

Vaughn took over as Alabama’s head coach this season after Brad Bohannon was fired after getting caught up in a gambling scandal. The new Crimson Tide skipper joined after a successful stint at Maryland.

Besides Lebron going inside the park to get the homers happening, TJ McCants, Evan Sleights and Will Hodo got the other three. The home runs were UA’s first of the season, after nothing went over the fence during the Friday or Saturday games.

Vaughn said he wasn’t surprised when the Tide’s power arrived on Saturday.

“We had obviously the wind in our face Friday night, a tough day to hit and yesterday, just a cold bitter day,” he said on the radio. “I thought we swung the bat better today.”

Aidan Moza got the win for the Tide with Alton Davis II picking up the save. Riley Quick got the win in Saturday’s game while Ben Hess earned in on Friday.

Alabama will be back in action Tuesday in Tuscaloosa for a midweek game against Middle Tennessee State. The Crimson Tide will face Alabama State in a three-game series next weekend, also at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
